A fellow singer from my choir, ‘Song of Joy’, had told me about Högsbyns Kanotklubb quite some time ago. He said I could join the club and then hire canoes or kayaks. That sounded like a lovely way to supplement our own canoe – especially when several of you are visiting and we want to get out on the water together.

In September, the club held an open day. I went along, had a look round and took the opportunity to try out various kayaks.
Which kayak is right for me?
The weather couldn’t have been much better: sunny and just right for getting out on the water.
I tested kayaks of various sizes and realised just how differently I felt in each one. I got on well with some, whilst others felt too unstable for me. It was helpful to be able to try them out straight away, rather than just standing on the bank wondering which boat might be suitable.
Now I have a much clearer idea of what sort of kayak works for me – and which ones I’d rather not take on a longer trip.
Paddling together on our next visit
This opens up a lovely opportunity for your next visits: we can go on a canoe and kayak trip with a larger group. I can organise additional boats to go with our own canoe, so that we can all paddle together.
I’m already looking forward to it: out on the water together, at a pace that suits us, and with time to enjoy the surroundings. And I’m sure we’ll manage to squeeze in a fika as well.
